Laser levels are increasingly becoming popular and essential tools in the construction world. The reason being that construction lasers save time, are extremely accurate and serve as an all-in one solution for many different tasks, such as plumbing, framing, leveling, machine control, deck construction, installing trim, measuring distance and elevation and for alignment. DEWALT DW0811 Product Summary:
The Dewalt DW0811 is a cube shaped laser device weighing 1.6 pounds and runs on 3 AAA batteries. The tool projects three self-leveling laser beams and their visibility extends to approximately 165 feet if used in the pulse mode along with a detector.
The laser options are controlled with three dedicated buttons and a locking button seals the pendulum to avoid any damage during transport or storage. Its housing is also water and debris resistant. It is an ideal tool that is easy to manage for contractors working on all sorts of construction projects.
Controls and Operation
The controls are ridiculously easy; three buttons for three settings: 360-degree, level and plumb. The lasers are self-leveling and when on plumb or out of level, the user is alerted with two indicators:
- A tiny red LED gives a visual notification that the laser is not properly leveled
- The laser beam pulsates.
Where line visibility is concerned, the company claims that the 360-degree laser has a range of 30 feet indoors. The light is super bright and it may as well be able to go beyond 30 feet. We did not use a detector with this laser but again, Dewalt says that with a detector the range can extend to up to 165 feet. This along with the full-time pulse mode, gives better visibility and line illuminance. The laser is able to cover complete 360 degrees by shooting 3 self-leveling beams. This actually exceeds expectations when you consider that it is in a working range of 100 feet and a +/- 5/32-inches accuracy.
The base can be mounted on to a tripod and allows the laser to be placed on any flat surface. It is threaded to accommodate ¼-20 minimum and 5/8-11 maximum inch fasteners to secure the tripod on demanding job sites. A knob at the base allows adjustment of the height to 2-1/4 inches high.
The laser comes with a pendulum lock at the front which keeps the product safe during transport and storage. It ensures that internal components are not damaged, making it excellent for a dangerous construction site. The outer housing is protected with a thick layer of rubber and the entire design of the laser meets the IP rating of 54 which is water/debris resistance. A free case is included in the product box, which has a strong metal clasp that further keeps the item secure.
The laser operates using three AAA batteries which are easily accessible even when mounted on a tripod. The plus and minus signs on the battery compartment lid are difficult to see, which is a slight drawback if you are working on a construction site with low light available. We do hope Dewalt addresses this minor issue. Other than that, we truly feel like the Dewalt DW0811 Self Leveling 360 Degree Line and Vertical Line Laser is an acceptable alternative to bulky and expensive rotary lasers.
